Any person living in or visiting residence halls has both rights and responsibilities when it comes to privacy and treating others respectfully.
Consistent with state law, no person may video/audio record, or take photographs for the purposes of, or resulting in, harassment, intimidation, eavesdropping, or any other activity inconsistent with law and university policy. Private locations include, but are not limited to, residence hall rooms, bathrooms, and lounges.
Following CSU’s Electronic Surveillance Systems Policy (Policy ID#: 6-6001-003), Housing & Dining Services operates security cameras and audio equipment in designated public areas of residence halls. These are only used for legitimate security and business reasons and must be approved by the Security Technology Committee (STC). Tampering with or damaging university recording equipment is not allowed.
Personal security cameras like Ring or Nest devices cannot be installed or used anywhere on university property. This includes residence hall rooms, campus apartments, offices, classrooms, and all other indoor and outdoor campus spaces. Personal cameras can invade privacy, interfere with official security systems, and create problems with unauthorized data collection. All surveillance on campus must be reviewed, approved, and managed by the Campus Security Systems Department to ensure consistency, protect privacy, and follow university policies and laws.
