In University Housing, we value the comfort, safety, and well-being of every member of our residence hall communities, humans and animals alike. While we support the role that animals can play in students’ lives, whether for support, service, or companionship, it’s essential to balance these needs with shared community standards, facility care, and university policies. Please note that residents are financially responsible for all damage to university property that their animal causes, regardless of that animal’s status (ESA, Service Animal, Pet).
Pets
Students are not permitted to have pets in the residence halls or adjacent grounds. One exception is that residents are permitted to have fish in their rooms with the following guidelines:
- Aquariums are permitted in the room as long as the aquarium is stocked with (non-dangerous) fish only.
- Aquariums must not exceed 25 gallons in capacity.
Emotional Support Animals and Service Animals
Colorado State University recognizes that some types of disabilities may require animal assistance as an accommodation. There are two categories of animals that may be allowed on campus to provide assistant to students with disabilities – service animals and emotional support animals.
Students may work with the Student Disability Center (SDC) for management of the accommodation and receive approval to have an emotional support animal. Students are responsible for the behavior of the animals in regard to other standard policies of the residence halls and city codes. Students will be required to complete a supplemental agreement and meet with the Residential Coordinator before bringing the emotional support animal into the residence halls.
Students are responsible to follow any and all guidelines and rules stipulated in the supplemental agreement and the University reserves the right to require the removal of the animal from University premises at any time.
