Community Living Standards

Bathroom cleaning

Community Style Bathrooms
Students may not leave personal items in community-style restrooms. If Building Services (BS) staff have closed a community restroom for cleaning, students are not permitted to enter that restroom until BS staff have completed the cleaning and reopened the restroom

Suite-Style Bathrooms
Students will be responsible for performing regular cleanings of their private bathroom spaces. BS staff will post a schedule notifying students of when suite-style restroom cleanings will happen. Students are responsible for keeping track of their scheduled bathroom cleaning and on the day of the scheduled cleaning, ensuring that all personal items from bathroom areas, including sinks and showers, are cleared. Staff cannot clean restrooms when personal items are present.

Repeated disruption of cleaning processes, including failure to remove personal items from suite bathrooms during scheduled cleanings or entering community bathrooms that have been closed for cleaning, may result in a referral to the Student Conduct process.

Trash

Students must use the receptacles located outside of the residence halls when removing personal trash and recycling. Students should not place personal trash or recycling in stairwells, bathrooms, or public trash cans within the residence hall.

Quiet Hours

Sunday – Thursday (10 p.m. – 7 a.m.)
Friday – Saturday (11 p.m. – 10 a.m.)

Students have the right to sleep and study in the residence hall environment. It is very important that residents follow the Quiet Hours and Courtesy Hours Policies in the halls. Courtesy Hours are in effect 24 hours a day. This means that even on weekends, residents have the right to sleep and study and may ask other students to keep the noise level down if they are being bothered by excessive noise. A Quiet Hours violation is defined as any noise, from any source, being audible two doors away from the source, or an individual’s failure to comply with Courtesy Hours.

Roommates

The rights to sleep, study, and feel comfortable in one’s own environment take precedence over social uses of a room. Residents may not deny, restrict, or interfere with their roommate’s access to their shared room. A resident’s use of the room, including visits with guests, may not infringe upon their roommate’s right to access and reasonably use the space. Residents may not use, consume, borrow, move, discard, or otherwise handle a roommate’s personal belongings, including food and beverages, without that roommate’s permission.

Gambling/Running a Business

State Law prohibits organized gambling in residence halls. University property, including residence hall/apartment rooms, cannot be used for personal or corporate business operations of any kind.

Pranks and Practical Jokes

Students may not engage in individual or group pranks and practical jokes that may lead to any of the following, including but not limited to:

  • Actual or perceived harassment.
  • Accident, injury, and/or damage to University property.
  • Damage to personal property.
  • Damage that requires abnormal and/or unnecessary cleaning of residence hall buildings and facilities.

Passive Participation

Students present for and aware of violations of the Student Conduct Code or housing policies may be considered involved in the activity.

If you are ever in the presence of a policy violation, you have some choices:

• You may attempt to stop the violation,

• You may contact University Housing staff, or

• You may remove yourself from the situation.

Everyone living in the community has the responsibility to take positive measures to intervene or otherwise get assistance if a violation of policy comes to their attention

Sports and Activities in the Halls

No sports or activities with the potential to cause excessive noise, damage to university property, harm to individuals, and/or disturbance of fellow hall members are allowed in residence halls.

This includes, but is not limited to:

• Dribbling, bouncing, kicking, throwing, striking, rolling, putting, or bowling any balls or similar objects

• Wrestling, boxing, sparring, or other forms of physical horseplay

• Using water guns, Nerf guns, toy guns, or similar items in any manner

• Running, jumping, parkour, or other activities involving rapid movement through hallways or common spaces

• Juggling, kicking, or otherwise playing with hacky sacks, balls, frisbees, or similar objects

• Using hockey sticks, pucks, or similar equipment

• Playing tag or similar chasing games

Students using courtyards or areas immediately surrounding residence halls for sports and/or activities must respect quiet hours and accept responsibility for any damage to facilities caused by their activities (e.g., broken windows). The same applies to lobby activities such as pool or ping pong.

Non-Compliance

All residents must comply with any direction given by university staff, including paraprofessional staff members like resident assistants or community coordinators, who are acting in the course of their official responsibilities. For further information, please reference the student code of conduct.

Use of Community Spaces

When using community spaces, students must be respectful of the space and leave it in the same state of cleanliness as when they entered it.

Students should be respectful when using shared spaces, as other people will be using them at the same time. They should also be mindful to share these areas fairly with everyone.

Solicitation

Door-to-door soliciting, distributing, and advertising are prohibited. Vendors will be asked to leave the area. Any solicitation activities must be reported to University Housing staff. Residents are prohibited from conducting any business or commercial activity, including solicitation or operating a business, from within their apartment unit or the surrounding residential property.

Wheeled Conveyance

Wheeled conveyances, as outlined in the CSU Wheeled Conveyances Policy, may not be used or ridden in residence halls. This includes, but is not limited to, bicycles, scooters, rollerblades/skates, skateboards, longboards, and hoverboards. For fire safety reasons, wheeled conveyances with batteries (e-bikes, e-scooters, etc.) may not be stored in residence halls. Students may be held financially responsible for any damage caused to residence hall facilities while using wheeled conveyances.
