Guest Policy

Hosting Guests and Guest Access

A guest is defined as any individual who is not a contracted resident of the specific residence hall, floor, or room in question. All guests must be escorted by a resident host at all times in residence hall areas that require residence hall keys or keyless entry devices (prox keys/cards) to enter. Residence hall keys or keyless entry devices may not be given to a guest for any reason. Resident hosts are responsible for notifying guests of university and residence hall policies and procedures and will be held accountable for the behavior of their guests or for damages caused by their guests.

Overnight Guests

An overnight guest is any guest who sleeps in, remains in, or occupies a resident’s room overnight. Residents are not permitted to host more than one overnight guest. Residents hosting overnight guests require the consent of all roommates/suitemates. Guests may stay no more than two nights in a seven-day period and no more than four nights in a thirty-day period. Roommate/suitemate consent may be withdrawn at any time. Overnight guests are not permitted before classes officially begin each semester, after classes officially end, or during finals week.

Non-affiliate Guests

Residents hosting non-CSU-affiliated guests between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. must ensure their guests are checked in and properly registered at their residence hall front desk upon arrival or, if already present, by 5 p.m. Guests will receive a guest pass and must have their guest pass and a valid photo ID with them for the duration of their time in residential spaces. The guest may be asked by CSU staff to present their photo ID and/or guest pass at any time during their visit. CSUPD will be called for any CSU non-affiliates without a guest pass or host escort. Non-CSU-affiliated guests are defined as anyone who does not have an active CSU ID.

Guest Registration Process

  1. Upon arrival of the guest, resident hosts must bring their guest to their front desk to complete the registration process. To be registered at the front desk, guests must always have a valid form of photo ID on them while in residential spaces. Valid forms of photo ID include:
    • A non-expired government-issued ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID
    • A current student ID from a different institution
  2. Once the front desk staff has verified the guest’s ID, they will complete a guest registration form. The guest form will ask for the following information:
    • Date & time of guest check-in
    • Host name / ID number
    • Guest name
    • Location – residence hall/apartment community
    • Whether the guest is a minor, overnight guest, or both
    • Estimated number of hours the guest will spend in the community
  3. A guest pass will be issued to the guest that includes the name of the host and the duration of the visit. Guests must always have the guest pass and photo ID on them while in residential spaces.

Minors

  • Minor guests (under 18 years old) are only permitted to enter the residence halls after being registered at the front desk. This registration must be completed immediately upon arrival.
  • Minor guests under the age of 12 are only permitted in residence halls when accompanied by their parent or guardian.
  • Minor guests must provide the name and a phone number for their parent or guardian upon registration, with the understanding that when providing that information, minors are automatically consenting to having their parent or guardian contacted in the event of behavioral issues or an emergency.
  • All minor guests must abide by all local and state laws, as well as all University Housing and CSU policies. Failure to abide by local or state laws, or CSU policies, may result in the CSU Police Department contacting the minor guest’s parent or legal guardian. Such violations may also affect the minor guest’s eligibility to visit the residence halls in the future and may result in the host losing the privilege of hosting minor guests.
  • Hosts are responsible for ensuring their minor guests follow the policies outlined above as well as the general guest policies for University Housing.
