Apartment Interior & Exterior

Apartment Surroundings

Apartment residents are responsible for the upkeep and condition of the area directly adjacent to their apartment. All porches, balconies, patios, landings, hallways, and grounds must be kept cleared clean and orderly. Appliances, indoor furniture, fences, privacy screens, food, cardboard boxes, carpet, mattresses, hazardous chemicals, trash, greenhouses, recyclables, and tools cannot be stored in these areas. University Apartment furniture left outside may result in replacement charges, as appropriate, in addition to a $100 fine per incident. Items left unattended outside of your apartment are not secured, and the resident assumes all risk of theft or damage.

Porches and balconies are not to be used for clothes drying. Children are not permitted to play on balconies, hallways, or landings.

Residents are not permitted to make additions or alterations to the structure, including the removal of the door clip or utilizing it as a hanger or for personal use. This includes adding hooks or nails to the exterior. Sidewalk and grounds painting is not allowed, however, children may play with chalk on the ground level only.

Aggie Family Only: Items which extend more than 14 inches into the walkway may not be stored on the balconies. Recognizing that it is not possible to outline in complete detail what is permissible to be placed outside the apartment, Housing staff reserves complete discretion in this regard.

Internal Apartment Entrances

In communities with internal apartment entrances (Aggie Village and International House), there may not be any items on the ground in front of the door or stored in the hallway at any time. This includes but is not limited to welcome mats of any thickness, pumpkins, decorations, shoes, plants, and bicycles.

Barbeque & Other Outside Equipment

Personal barbecue grills, charcoal grills, or gas grills with propane containers, or any other open-flame cooking devices as well as fire pits are NOT allowed to be stored or used in ANY University Housing area, including but not limited to interiors, patios, and balconies. Residents may not store lighter fluid, flammable charcoal, or any other flammable materials inside or outside of the apartments.

Electric grills are allowed to be used 20 feet away from the building and must be attended to at all times. Electric grills must be plugged into an outdoor outlet and not interfere with neighboring apartments or other community areas/operations. Extension cords or similar cords cannot be run through apartment doorways.

While using public grills, residents must attend to the grill at all times. The resident using the grill is responsible for cleaning the grill afterward and for safely disposing of the charcoal.

Interacting with Wild Animals

The placement of bird feeders or bird houses, as well as the feeding of birds or other wildlife, is prohibited.

Should geese appear in the vicinity of an apartment area, it is important to remember that geese are federally protected. It is illegal to feed, startle, injure, scare, yell at, or throw things at geese. Tampering with nests and eggs is also prohibited.

Outdoor Decorations

In family and graduate housing, residents are responsible for caring for areas directly in front of their apartments that are not covered by University landscaping. No planting is allowed outside these areas. Only flowers and appropriate landscaping plants are permitted. Vegetables cannot be grown in the flower beds surrounding apartments. A limited number of community garden plots are available for growing vegetables.

Pumpkins and Jack-o’-Lanterns

  • Limit the time pumpkins or jack-o’-lanterns are left outside. Set them out just before Halloween and dispose of them immediately after Halloween.
  • Clear dry leaves and debris from the area before placing pumpkins.
  • Use non-flammable glow sticks for illumination. Do not use battery-operated candles or electrical lights.

Toys in the Courtyard

Unattended, unlabeled, or broken toys and children’s bikes will be disposed of by Housing & Dining Services staff.  All toys and children’s bikes must be returned and properly stored inside the apartment. All toys and bikes are to be labeled.

Appliances

Personal appliances must be Underwriter’s Laboratory (U.L.) approved and in good working order. Appliances must be kept within the apartment.

Clothes washers and dryers may be used only where hookups are provided. If resident-owned appliances are used, the following stipulations must be adhered to and will be strictly enforced:

  • Residents are strictly prohibited from altering electrical outlets/wiring, plumbing, and/or other utilities for any reason, particularly attempting to connect a personal appliance.
  • When portable dishwashers and clothes washers are used, they must be attached to the kitchen sink and faucet for both the water supply and drainage. Permanent connections are not permitted.
  • All damages and cleaning charges associated with the use of resident-owned appliances will be assessed to the resident. A typical example is the flooding that may occur when the drainage system overflows when using a portable dish or clothes washer. Residents should regularly inspect hoses and hose connections on washers and dishwashers, as old or worn hoses are more likely to burst and cause flooding in the apartment. In the event of flooding in the apartment caused by an old or worn hose, the resident is responsible for the costs to repair the apartment unit.

Bidet Installation

Residents may not independently install any type of bidet or shower device, such as a handheld or other spout, in their apartment. Due to safety and building code-related installation requirements, only the bidet model provided by Housing & Dining Services will be installed.  This includes any water-spraying device to be used outside of the sink basin or bathtub.

Toilet seat bidets are available for installation in apartment bathrooms upon request. Please contact the community front desk to request bidet installation by Housing & Dining Facilities staff with this form filled out. Residents making this request will be charged $50 to cover costs and installation.  Installation will occur in as timely a manner as possible.  Residents should note that such installation requests are not an emergency and may take some time to complete.  The time waiting does not permit the resident to complete their own installation.  Housing & Dining Services staff will complete the installation as quickly as possible, providing updates as we are able.

Bidets will come with an operating instruction manual, and residents are expected to abide by operation usage guidelines. If there is a malfunction of the bidet, residents must submit a work order request at apartment area front desks as soon as the issue is noticed so it can be addressed and repaired. Any non-compliance with the official operating instructions and/or any damage caused by inappropriate usage of the bidet, including water damage, will be the responsibility of and charged to the resident(s).

Like all other amenities provided in the University Apartments, the bidet will remain the property of Colorado State University, Housing & Dining Services.  Upon move-out, residents must leave the bidet in clean condition as outlined in the vacate policies and expectations.  Residents will be charged additional damage fees for any damage or unapproved removal upon move-out. This could include the full replacement cost of the bidet up to $50.

Holiday Decorations

The following decorations are NOT allowed:

  • Combustible decorations. This Includes:
    • Bales of hay, loose hay, leaves, sticks, straw, or cornstalks
    • Unattended lid candles, incense, or flammable liquids (e.g., reed diffusers)
    • Cotton batting (fake spider webs) and tinsel that are not fire-resistant
    • Black plastic used to darken or cover large spaces
  • Flammable liquids (e.g., reed diffusers)

Please do NOT:

  • Hang anything from the ceiling or from fire equipment or fire sprinkler systems.
  • Cover lights or EXIT signs.
  • Block doorways or windows.
  • Run electrical cords through doorways.
  • Do not leave lit candles, a hot plate used for potpourri, or incense unattended.
  • Put up holiday decorations in hallway corridors of enclosed buildings, where applicable.

No holiday lights are allowed on trees or fences. Holiday lights outside the apartment are permitted if battery or solar-operated.

Use extreme caution with decorative trees, wreaths, or similar items, and lights to avoid creating a fire hazard.

This includes not overloading electrical outlets and being sure to dispose of the real pine trees and needles before they become dry and brittle.

Television Mounting

Residents are prohibited from mounting a TV on the walls in the apartments.

Heat in the Apartment

Apartment heat is regulated either by a thermostat for the entire apartment or by baseboard heating in individual apartment rooms.  If a resident has questions about the type or how to operate the heating in the apartment, please contact community staff through the front desk.

In the winter, thermostats must be kept at least 65 degrees, and baseboard heaters must be on low at all times. If residents are leaving for a trip, they must turn the thermostat down to 65 degrees or turn the baseboard heaters to low.

Space heaters are NOT permitted due to their risk of interfering with apartment electrical service and fire safety.  If there is a heat outage at any point, Housing & Dining Services Facilities will supply temporary space heaters until the heat is restored.

Residents concerned that the heat is not working should check the thermostat or baseboard control to make sure the setting is higher than the room temperature. If the heat does not come on within 20 minutes, residents can call the apartment office during office hours or the staff member on duty after office hours.

Internet Access

The apartment complexes have Internet access provided and managed by CSU Housing & Dining Technology Services.  Residents experiencing network connection issues should please contact the Housing Technology Services Help Desk by calling the Housing Technology Services Help Desk at 970-491-4734, emailing the help desk, or submitting a work order.

A “Getting Connected” page is available from the apartment complex office or by visiting the Housing Technology Help Desk web page.

All apartments have both wired and wireless network connections available.  These may vary slightly depending on the apartment complex.  Aggie Family, UV-1500 and UV-1600 use wall-mounted wireless access points that also have wired port connections available along the bottom of the access point.  Aggie Village, International House, and UV-1700 have both wall jacks and ceiling-mounted access points.

All devices connected via a wired or wireless network must meet University security requirements.  Devices must use a currently supported operating system.  It is the user’s responsibility to keep their computer’s operating system and software patched and up-to-date.  Please read the University’s “Acceptable Use Policy.”

Painting of Apartments

Residents are not allowed to paint any area of their apartments, interior or exterior.

Lockboxes & Keys

Lockboxes or similar devices used to share a key(s) are not permitted for use with any doors of the apartment. This is to prevent keys from being used by unauthorized individuals, which violates University Housing Policy and is stipulated within the lease. Residents are also prohibited from installing their own locks or doorknobs to any part of their apartment unit, including bedrooms within family apartment units.

Residents are not permitted to give their University keys and prox cards to any individual except for a University representative acting in the scope of their responsibilities. Students may only possess or use University keys or prox cards issued by University staff. Any duplication of University keys or Prox cards is prohibited.  Residents in a family apartment who wish to have a guest or someone residing with them must properly register their guest via the “Manage Apartment Occupants” form on the Housing Portal. Once / if the registration is approved for a key, a set will be granted to your guest.
