Pack It.

  • Remove personal property from room, bathrooms, closets, drawers, and vanities.
  • Return all University property to its appropriate area – including items borrowed from the front desk and cups, plates and silverware from the dining centers. Don’t forget about the ReusePass containers!

Clean your room thoroughly and reset the furniture to avoid charges:

  • If you are the first roommate to leave, please do not leave all the work to your remaining roommate. All residents of the room may be responsible for improper checkout and excess cleaning charges.
  • Return furniture to the setting at the time of move-in, including returning the bed to the low setting (20” from the frame to the floor). Please work with your roommate or a neighbor to help you safely do so.  If assistance with bed de-lofting is needed, submit a maintenance request, no later than the Friday before Finals Week.
  • Remove writing, marks, and residue from walls, ceilings, and doors.
  • Clean up bathroom areas in suite halls.
  • Vacuum the carpet in and immediately outside your room, including under beds.
  • Empty all trash/recycling/composting to the designated dumpsters outside your hall and wash out bins (DO NOT leave it in hallways, restrooms, fire towers, or other common areas).
  • If you have rented a Micro-Fridge, unplug, defrost, empty and clean it, then leave it in your room (with fridge door open) when you check out.
  • Close and lock windows, and close drapes (ask your RA for more information about securing windows).
  • Turn lights off.
  • Close and lock doors.

Store It.

  • Remember to start packing before finals and take things home in the weeks leading up to move-out if you can.
  • If you are currently storing anything in your hall’s storage area, contact your RA before finals week to get items out by May 10.
PLEASE NOTE, effective May 2024, the use of storage rooms will be discontinued.  Options for storage in the Fort Collins area can be identified online including some details via the Parent & Family Program website, parentsandfamily.colostate.edu/preferred-business-partners/.

Once you have completed the room preparation requirements, there will be a pre-labeled Key Pack posted on your door.  Review the instructions on the packet, place all your room, building, and mail keys in the Key Pack, sign and date the label, and turn it in at the front desk. Your signature and return of the Key Pack is an important indicator that you have followed proper check-out steps and understand charges may apply for improper check-out.

Room Check

  • Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment with an RA to check your room before you depart.
  • RAs may make suggestions regarding the condition of your room, but this review does not constitute an inspection.
  • Your signature on the Key Pack indicates your understanding that Maintenance and Environmental Services personnel will inspect your room after you leave.
  • This is the final inspection. If you wish to be present during the inspection, or if you have any concerns to discuss, schedule an appointment at (970) 491-7171 .
    • The appointment needs to be scheduled at least 24 hours prior to check-out.
    • Personal belongings must be removed before inspection.
    • If damages or cleaning charges are assessed they will be posted to your student account.
  • Complete an address change through your RamWeb account prior to check-out.
  • Go to the Housing Portal, click on Resources and complete the May Departure Form.
  • Bring your key pack to the front desk. If you are leaving during hours the desk is closed, 12 a.m. – 7 a.m., call the RA duty number for additional guidance.
