Gender Inclusive

Housing

In our ongoing mission to provide housing that meets the diverse needs and interests of ALL students, we are proud to offer Gender Inclusive Housing (formerly known as All-Gender & Open Housing) in designated spaces across campus. Gender Inclusive Housing provides students with a community where roommates and/or suitemates of any gender can live together in a more integrated and inclusive environment.

These housing options are designed to support students who may face barriers in traditional binary gendered living experiences, including transgender, LGBTQIA+, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming students. Students across all identities are eligible to participate in our gender inclusive housing process, including allies to the LGBTQIA+ community and students who do not want gender to be a primary factor in choosing a roommate. Participation in Gender Inclusive Housing is entirely voluntary, and students must agree to the Community Guidelines to participate.

Gender Inclusive Housing exists in designated areas withing the following halls:
  • Laurel Village-Alpine Hall
  • Braiden Hall (as part of Key Communities)
  • Laurel Village-Piñon Hall (as part of the Amplify Learning Community)
  • Summit Hall
  • Westfall Hall
To participate in Gender Inclusive Housing, please complete the following steps:
  1.  Access the Residence Hall Application on the Housing Portal
  2. Add Gender Inclusive Housing as one of the Residential Learning Community options on your application.
  3. Complete the Gender Inclusive Housing Community Guidelines Agreement.
  4. Participate in roommate selection with other students in Gender Inclusive Housing.
  5. During room selection, select a room space indicated as Gender Inclusive Housing.

* We make every effort to provide living spaces that meet the needs of our diverse residential population. Please reach out to us via email if you have specific questions about the accommodations process, gender inclusive housingResidential Learning Communitiesand more.

Communities & Housing Options

Part of Laurel Village, Alpine Hall is located on the north side of campus. This hall includes rooms of multiple types, including single, double, quad, and suite-style rooms. In addition to gendered community style bathrooms, each floor has a single-stall all-gender restroom with a shower. Suite-style rooms have access to a more private bathroom as well. Alpine Hall has groups of gender inclusive rooms within a larger community to create more integrated gender inclusive living opportunities. Generally, Alpine Hall does not have gendered floors, and it has limited availability for general assignments.

Braiden Hall is a suite-style hall that is located near the academic core of campus. It is home to Key Communities, so residents must be participating in Key to select rooms here. Braiden Hall has groups of gender inclusive rooms within a larger community to create more integrated gender inclusive living opportunities. The rooms are suite-style, so they have access to an attached, private bathroom. There are all-gender restrooms located in the basement as well.

Part of Laurel Village, Piñon Hall is located on the north side of campus. Piñon is home to the College of Natural Science’s Amplify Learning Community, so residents must apply to participate in this community to select rooms here. This hall includes rooms of multiple types, including single, double, quad, and suite-style rooms. Every floor has a single stall all-gender restroom with a shower in addition to gendered community style bathrooms. Suite-style rooms have access to a more private bathroom as well. Piñon Hall has clusters of gender inclusive rooms within a larger community, to create more integrated gender inclusive living opportunities.

Amplify Pride is a sub-community within Amplify for students who identify as LGBTQIA+ and want to participate in a community where they grow their involvement with the Pride Resource Center and other LGBTQIA+ -related programming.

Summit Hall is a suite-style hall that is open to students of any academic year. Two wings are dedicated as gender-inclusive communities, in which students can live with roommates of any gender and have more private, suite-style bathrooms. The other wings within Summit Hall are open assignment and the floors are mixed gendered.

Westfall is a community style hall that is open to students of any academic year. One floor is dedicated as a gender inclusive community, in which students can live with roommates of any gender and share two multi-stall community style bathrooms. This floor has options for double community style rooms, 1 quad, and 1 single. The other floors in Westfall are open assignment and mixed gender. There are also two all-gender single-stall restrooms located on the first floor.

Mixed Gender Housing Options

Students who want to live in a mixed gender room or request a specific roommate of any gender do not need to enter the gender inclusive housing process. This may include relatives/friends, live-in aid/attendant accommodations, trans or nonbinary students who do not wish to live in a designated Gender Inclusive Housing Community, and more. Instead, please email housing@colostate.edu to submit your specific request. We make every effort to provide living spaces that meet the needs of our diverse residential population. Our Housing staff can help answer specific questions about the accommodations process, gender inclusive housing, Residential Learning Communities, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can live in Gender Inclusive Housing?

Any CSU student eligible to live in the residence halls is eligible for this living option. This includes first-year, continuing, and transfer students. It is intended to be a welcoming and inclusive living environment for people of all genders, particularly for those who are transgender, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming. Students are expected to agree to the Community Guidelines to participate in this living option.

Why is it important to offer Gender Inclusive Housing?

There are some students for whom traditional, same-gender room assignments are not ideal or appropriate. Housing & Dining Services recognizes the importance of evolving and adapting to meet the needs of our students. The goal of providing a variety of living arrangement options in the residence halls is to help foster an environment that acknowledges, appreciates, and respects the diversity of CSU’s student body.

How can I find a roommate?

You can look for roommates through the Residence Hall Application when Roommate Selection is available. Students who participate in Gender Inclusive Housing will be able to view all other students (of all genders) who have opted into Gender Inclusive Housing to support them in finding affirming roommates. You can also search for someone specific if you already know you want to be their roommate. For those who do not select a roommate on their own, Housing & Dining Services will assign a roommate from the Gender Inclusive Housing community based on the Lifestyle Questionnaire within the housing application.

How can I find LGBTQIA+ affirming roommates?

In the Roommate Profile page of the Residence Hall Application, students can select ‘I am looking for an LGBTQIA+ Affirming Roommate’. This is an available option for all students, not just those in Gender Inclusive Housing. You will have the option to ‘search by profiles’ based on responses to this question, along with other roommate profile questions. More information on roommate matching can be found in the Pride’s Guide to On-Campus Housing and the Roommate and Room Assignment FAQ page.

For those who fully participate in the Gender Inclusive Housing process, gender is not a factor used to determine roommates or housing assignments. Generally, University Housing uses the gender identity that students select in their Housing Application for their housing assignment, which include the following options:

  • Agender
  • Genderqueer/fluid/nonconforming
  • Man/Male
  • Nonbinary
  • Not Listed
  • Trans woman/trans female
  • Trans man/trans male
  • Two Spirit
  • Woman/Female
Where is Gender Inclusive Housing located?

Summit Hall and Westfall Hall have designated Gender Inclusive Communities, where entire floors or wings are designated as gender inclusive. Laurel Village and Braiden Hall have designated gender inclusive “clusters”, where specific rooms within a larger community are designated as gender inclusive and grouped together. Participants in Amplify and Key Residential Learning Communities can select designated Gender Inclusive spaces during the Room Selection process.

What are the bathroom arrangements in each hall?

Some halls have multi-user, community style bathrooms and some have all-gender restrooms, which are lockable, private, single-user bathrooms that are open for anyone to use. Some of these restrooms may also have a shower in them. CSU has over 200 All-gender Restrooms on campus.

Academic Village, Braiden Hall, Corbett Hall, Parmelee Hall, and Summit Hall have suite style rooms with access to a private bathroom. Some suite-style rooms share a bathroom with another room. All these halls, except for Summit, additionally have all-gender restrooms available on the first floor or basement levels.

Laurel Village offers both suite style and community style living arrangements. Community-style floors have two gendered bathrooms with multiple shower/toilet stalls, as well as an all-gender restroom with shower on each floor. Suite style floors have access to private bathrooms. Some suite-style rooms share a bathroom with another room. The Laurel Village Pavilion also has an all-gender restroom on the first floor.

Allison Hall, Edwards Hall, Ingersoll Hall, and Newsom Hall have men’s and women’s floors with mainly double occupancy, community-style rooms. Each floor has a gendered, community-style bathroom. Ingersoll Hall has all-gender restrooms in the lobby.

Durward Hall and Westfall Hall have mixed-gendered floors with two gendered, community-style bathrooms on each floor. Two all-gender restrooms are provided on the first floor. The Durrell Center, which is an adjacent commons building/dining center, also has an all-gender restroom on the first floor.

Am I guaranteed a spot in Gender Inclusive Housing?

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that all students who accept the Community Guidelines will be able to live within the community. Assignment is dependent on student demand for Gender Inclusive Housing and the number of spaces available each year. We will do our best to continually expand these community spaces as needed.

What if I cannot find a roommate I feel best matches with me?

Living with a roommate is both a challenge and an opportunity for all students, so the hope and desire to make a good match is understandable.  We must acknowledge that there will be limits to the availability of some room options and roommate matches, each of which can feel disheartening if a preferred arrangement is not possible.  Still, it is our hope that there will be as much opportunity and staff support as possible to encourage a good campus living experience.

Will others know I am participating in a gender inclusive housing option?

All students who have opted into Gender Inclusive Housing will be able to see each other during the roommate selection process. Students who are not participating in Gender Inclusive Housing will not know of your participation. Housing & Dining Services staff will also have access to this information. This information would not be listed in RAMweb or FAMweb.

What if I want to live in a residence hall that doesn't offer Gender Inclusive Housing?

Transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming students are not limited to the options listed in Gender Inclusive Housing. Students have the option to form a mixed gender roommate group during roommate selection, even if they do not intend to reside in a designated Gender Inclusive space, and select a room or suite in any available residence hall during room selection. If you have a specific request or preference for the gender designation of the floor or roommate you are assigned, please email housing@colostate.edu with your request.

Where will my preferred name be used?

Your preferred name listed in RAMweb may be used for the following:

  • Door decoration when you move in
  • Hall and Apartment Community Rosters
  • University Housing Communication
  • Communicating with your Emergency/Confidential Contact
I'm looking to find a single room based on my identity and needs. How can I participate in that process?

Many students are interested in single rooms to provide an increased sense of comfort, safety, and privacy. Single rooms, including those in suite-style housing, are in very high demand. It is therefore unlikely students will acquire a single room, particularly in their first year at CSU. Having a single room may be something a student can advocate for through the Student Disability Center’s Accommodations process, but as outlined above, this is only for situations in which a student has a documented access need for a single room. Having a single room is not the only way to guarantee a sense of safety or comfort. We encourage students to be open and engage in the roommate selection process to find a roommate who is affirming of, or even shares, their experience.

Any accommodations that involve medical information or disabilities are routed through CSU’s Student Disability Center. Students must apply for housing accommodations in a similar fashion to accessing classroom accommodations. This may include situations such as Mental Health Concerns (like social anxiety or depression), Eating Disorders, Emotional Support Animals, Physical Needs (like wheelchair access), needs related to medication, and more. SDC requires medical or therapeutic documentation as part of their accommodations processes. SDC maintains confidentiality and will communicate only the needed accommodation to Housing & Dining Services for the student.

*Please note: Being transgender, nonbinary, or queer is not considered a disability, so accommodations related to these identities cannot be granted through the Student Disability Center.
